Bifold doors

Bifold, or ‘folding/sliding’ doors, offer the perfect opportunity to open up an area; indeed an entire wall may literally be slid back and effortlessly opened up to enable a smooth transition between indoors and outside, providing a great space for entertaining.

Bifold doors are perfect for kitchen /dining areas leading onto a garden or patio, and they work at their best when used in a wider opening, although smaller door configurations are possible.

Because Woodland bifold doors are made to measure we are able to tailor your doors to your individual requirements, whether you want a contemporary solution or a more traditional appearance featuring glazing bars and period panels, for example. All our doors have the following qualities: maximum durability, high security, superior thermal performance and low maintenance.

Timber

All Woodland bifold doors feature Accoya™ wood. Accoya™ is an FSC certified, low maintenance, extremely durable timber with exceptional dimensional stability and UV resistance.

Woodland doors also incorporate Red Grandis, an FSC certified hardwood possessing the durability and stability necessary for use in external joinery in harsh environments.

Considerations

Some things to consider when choosing to install bifold doors:

Bifold doors are more suited to larger openings. The maximum size of an individual door leaf is 1000mm but there is no limit to the number of door leaves you may have.

Bifold doors work best when the opening area is divided into uneven numbers of doors, for example 1 door opening one way /3 doors opening the other, or 5 doors all opening one way.

Even numbers of door leaves are also possible but there is no ‘lead door’ which can be opened independently – all doors opening in one direction must open together, which usually makes even numbered door configurations of more than two leaves impractical.

Doors can be made as outward or inward opening, and can be top hung or bottom running as necessary.

Many customers want to achieve a flush profile between inside and outside. Whilst this is possible it is not always practical and careful consideration must be given to weather sealing and drainage. Woodland will be happy to advise.

Bifold doors are usually thought of as a contemporary feature, but Woodland’s experience with more traditional doors enables us to incorporate period features into our modern doors. The result is a set of traditional looking doors with the benefit of a modern bifold action.

Woodland will work with you to design a solution that meets your needs and design ambitions, be they traditional or contemporary.

GLAZING

Glazing is an increasingly important factor when specifying wooden sash windows, especially in period properties. Thermal performance, acoustics and heritage looks are all influenced by the choice of glass.

All double glazed units are manufactured in-house by Woodland to the relevant standards (BSEN 1279). This not only gives us total quality control, it also allows us to manufacture a wide variety of specifications including energy saving Argon and Krypton gas-filled units, slim-line heritage units and acoustic glass.
